Mir es una estación orbital espacial soviética. Mir es la primera estación de investigación en el mundo que ha sido habitada constantemente por humanos en el espacio. Mir es también la primera estación espacial de "tercera generación" que se construirá. La estación fue construida por varios años con un diseño modular. Mir posee el récord de la presencia humana más larga en el espacio, menos de ocho días para alcanzar un período de 10 años, y gracias a la cooperación, pueden ser visitados por cosmonautas y transporte internacional de varios países. Uno de los eventos más importantes en el Programa de Transbordador Espacial Mir, es el servicio de transporte de los Estados Unidos que regresa 11 veces a esta estación, llevando suministros y proporcionando un cambio de tripulación. La instalación de Mir en órbita se realiza conectando varios módulos, cada uno de los cuales se lanzó por separado desde 1986 hasta 1996. La estación continúa existiendo hasta el 23 de marzo de 2001, cuando se retira de la órbita y se divide durante el reingreso a la atmósfera sobre el Pacífico Sur.
