Sufismo - Términos colectivos para varias corrientes místicas en el Islam. Viene de la palabra sufí, pero esto no se confirma de ninguna manera, porque dibuja el patrón de los monjes sufíes cristianos vestidos de pelos. El modelo para los primeros anachofitas cristianos fue Juan el Bautista, que vestía una túnica de lana de camello. Tal túnica y cintura caderas eran el vestido "estándar" de los ascetas. Los árabes sami llamaban sufich khakirami, que significa pobre o derviche, que proviene de la palabra persa regalo y darwaze y significa el pobre hombre llamando a la puerta. Es un intento de lograr la unidad con el Absoluto divino. La forma más común consiste en oraciones regulares, recitación de fórmulas religiosas y nombres divinos, canto grupal, estudio de las sagradas escrituras del Islam y, sobre todo, la represión del propio ego. Uno de los sufíes más destacados fue Rabia Al-Basri, Jeddah, Al-Hallad, Al-Ghazali e Ibn'Arabi.

Sufizm – zbiorcze określenia dla różnorakich nurtów mistycznych w islamie. Pochodzi ono od słowa suf صوف, co jednak nie jest w żaden sposób potwierdzone, bowiem czerpiąc wzór z chrześcijańskich mnichów sufi ubierali się we włosiennice. Wzorem dla wczesnochrześcijańskich anachoretów był Jan Chrzciciel, który nosił szatę z wielbłądziej wełny. Taka szata i przepasane biodra były "wzorcowym" strojem ascety. Sami Arabowie zwali sufich fakirami, co znaczy biedak, albo derwiszami, co pochodzi od perskich słów dar oraz darwaze i oznacza nędzarza stukającego do drzwi. Jest on próbą osiągnięcia jedności z boskim Absolutem. W najpowszechniejszej formie polega na regularnych modlitwach, recytacji formuł religijnych i boskich imion, grupowych śpiewach, studiowaniu świętych pism islamu, a przede wszystkim na wyparciu się własnego ego. Jednymi z najznaczniejszych sufi byli Rabia Al-Basri, Dżunajd, Al-Halladż, Al-Ghazali i Ibn ʾArabi.
