Transit

Transit, también NAVSAT, NNSS: el primer sistema operativo de navegación por satélite. Originalmente utilizado por la Armada de los Estados Unidos para determinar la posición de los submarinos con misiles balísticos tipos de Polaris, y más tarde también por los buques de superficie, y en 1967, puesto a disposición de los usuarios civiles. Fue utilizado, entre otros. en navegación y para fines hidrográficos y geodésicos. El sistema fue desarrollado por Applied Physics Laboratory, parte de Johns Hopkins University por orden de la Marina de los EE. UU. Las primeras pruebas exitosas se realizaron en 1960, en 1964 entró en operación Transit. Los satélites situados en órbitas polares bajas a aproximadamente 1100 km por encima de la superficie de la Tierra. El período de circulación de satélites alrededor de la Tierra fue de aproximadamente 106 minutos. Se necesitaba una constelación de cinco satélites para garantizar la cobertura mundial. Durante el funcionamiento normal del sistema en órbita, se mantuvieron 10 satélites. Debido a su sistema de inconvenientes de tránsito fue reemplazado por GPS y se disolvió en 1996, aunque sus satélites todavía se utilizan para otros fines.

Transit, również NAVSAT, NNSS – pierwszy działający system nawigacji satelitarnej. Używany początkowo przez Marynarkę Wojenną USA do określania pozycji przez okręty podwodne z pociskami balistycznymi typu Polaris, później również przez okręty nawodne, a w 1967 udostępniono go użytkownikom cywilnym. Wykorzystywano go m.in. w żegludze oraz do celów hydrograficznych i geodezyjnych. System został opracowany przez Applied Physics Laboratory, część Johns Hopkins University na zamówienie Marynarki Wojennej USA. Pierwszych pomyślnych testów dokonano w 1960, w 1964 Transit wszedł do eksploatacji. Satelity umieszczano na niskich orbitach okołobiegunowych na wysokości około 1100 km nad powierzchnią Ziemi. Okres obiegu satelity wokół Ziemi wynosił ok. 106 minut. Do zapewnienia globalnego zasięgu systemu potrzebna była konstelacja pięciu satelitów. W okresie normalnej działalności systemu na orbicie było utrzymywanych 10 satelitów. Ze względu na swoje wady system Transit został zastąpiony przez GPS i zakończył działalność w roku 1996, choć jego satelity wykorzystywano nadal do innych celów.
