Urdu: un idioma indoeuropeo del grupo indoario utilizado actualmente por más de 50 millones de personas en el subcontinente indio y más de un millón de personas que viven fuera de Asia. El urdu y el hindi son casi idénticos en términos de estructura gramatical y vocabulario básico, pero existen importantes diferencias léxicas entre ellos, y otro sistema de escritura: el hindi utiliza el alfabeto indio devanagari. Estas diferencias conducen a lenguajes incomprensibles a nivel de, por ejemplo, conferencias académicas.

Urdu i hindi są językami niemal identycznymi pod względem struktury gramatycznej i podstawowego słownictwa, natomiast występują między nimi znaczne różnice leksykalne, oraz inny system pisma – hindi posługuje się indyjskim alfabetem dewanagari. Różnice te powodują, że na poziomie np. wykładu naukowego języki te stają się wzajemnie niezrozumiałe.
