Dionisio, en la mitología griega, el dios del vino y la vid, llamado (en Romanos) y Baco. También fue llamado Bromius, Liber, Lyaeus, etc. Dionisio fue una de las divinidades más importantes conocidas en la antigüedad, y cuya adoración se extendió por todo el mundo. Él era el hijo de Zeus con la muerte de Semele, la hija del Rey Cadmus y Harmony. Entonces él era parte de la segunda generación de los atletas olímpicos. Se dijo que, cuando instó a Hera, Semele le pidió a Zeus que le mostrara con toda su fuerza y esplendor. Zeus cumple su oración: es retratado como una nube de fuego. Pero incapaz de soportar el esplendor de esta vista, Semele parpadea y da a luz antes de tiempo. Para proteger a su hijo de los celos, Zeus lo confía con el Rey Athamas y su esposa, Ino, para criarlo. En su casa, Dionisio vive travestido en ropa de mujer por ser irreconocible. Hera le da un rastro y, como venganza, se lleva las mentes de Ino y Athamas. Entonces Zeus envía a Dioniso a Nysa, y se ocupa de las ninfas para aumentarlo (v. Hyades). Cuando hicieron gran Dionisio empezó a dar vueltas por el mundo: Aegiptos, Siria, Frigia, Tracia, y por último, la India, extendiendo por todo el camino de la secta. Los que estaban junto a él castigados o tomar sus mentes (como, por ejemplo, el rey Licurgo, de Penteo, Agave, etc.) o que se transformó en tiburones (como, por ejemplo, los piratas querían para venderlo como un esclavo en su camino a Naxos). Finalmente, Dionisio descendió al Infierno para buscar la sombra de su madre y redimir su vida. Hades aceptó donarla y Dionisio se llevó a Semele a sí misma en el Olimpo. También participó en la lucha de los dioses con los gigantes y se dice que mató a Eurytus con un golpe de neumático. También se conoce el episodio de amor entre Ariadna y el dios después de que fue abandonado por Theseus (v. Y Ariadne). El culto a Dionisio se extendió por todo el mundo antiguo. En las celebraciones que se le dan en honor a él (dionisia o bacanal) todos participan pero, sobre todo, mujeres. Entonces el dios se celebraba en canciones y bailes, a menudo con un carácter orgiástico. Dionisio fue imaginado, acompañado por una línea de bacantes, silencios, sátira, etc. Los misterios de Dionisio se celebraron en Italia hasta la época imperial.
