Mr. stup. Sb. stup „stîlp”, din
sl. stlŭpŭ, stlŭbŭ (›
stîlp).
Cf. sb. stublina, stuga „trunchi gol de arbore”,
stub „coloană” față de
rut. stub „trunchi găunos”), căci un trunchi gol era forma curentă a stupului primitiv. Totuși acest etimon a fost respins și s-a preferat în general
lat. *
