Dirigeable
Un dirigeable ou un dirigeable est un type d'aérostat ou un avion plus léger que l'air qui est propulsé dans l'air par la puissance du moteur. Un aérostat reste au sol en ayant une grande enveloppe remplie d'un gaz de levage qui est moins dense que l'air environnant. Dans les premiers dirigeables, le gaz de levage utilisé était l'hydrogène, en raison de sa grande capacité de levage. Le gaz à l'hélium a presque la même capacité de levage et n'est pas non plus inflammable mais est rare et relativement coûteux. Des quantités importantes ont été découvertes aux États-Unis et, pendant un certain temps, l'hélium était rarement utilisé pour les dirigeables à l'extérieur des États-Unis. La plupart des aéronefs construits depuis les années 1960 ont utilisé de l'hélium, bien que certains aient utilisé de l'air chaud. En plus de l'enveloppe principale, un dirigeable dispose également de moteurs et d'équipage, généralement dans une gondole accrochée sous l'enveloppe. Les principaux types d'aéronef sont non rigides, semi-rigides et rigides. Les dirigeables non rigides, souvent appelés «coups de tête», dépendent de la pression interne pour maintenir la forme de l'aéronef. Les aéronefs semi-rigides maintiennent la forme de l'enveloppe par la pression interne, mais ont une forme de structure de support, telle qu'une quille fixe, attachée à elle.
