Amebocyte
Un amibocyte ou un amibocyte est une cellule mobile dans le corps des invertébrés tels que les échinodermes, les mollusques ou les éponges. Ils se déplacent par pseudopodes. À l'instar de certains globules blancs des vertébrés, dans de nombreuses espèces, des amibocytes se retrouvent dans le sang ou dans le liquide corporel et jouent un rôle dans la défense de l'organisme contre les agents pathogènes. Selon l'espèce, il peut également digérer et distribuer des aliments, éliminer les déchets, former des fibres squelettiques, combattre les infections et les transformer en d'autres types de cellules. Le lysat d'amibocytes de Limulus, un extrait d'amibocytes à partir du crabe ferreux, est couramment utilisé dans un test pour détecter les endotoxines bactériennes. Dans les éponges, les amibocytes ou les archéococytes sont des cellules trouvées dans le mésynyle qui peuvent se transformer en l'un des types cellulaires les plus spécialisés de l'animal. Dans la littérature ancienne, le terme amibocytes est parfois utilisé comme synonyme de phagocyte.
