Babylonie
La Babylonie était une ancienne nation et une région culturelle sémitique de langue akkadienne basée dans le centre-sud de la Mésopotamie. Il est apparu comme un État indépendant c. 1894 avant JC, avec la ville de Babylone comme capitale. Il était souvent impliqué dans la rivalité avec son collègue Akkadien d'Assyrie dans le nord de la Mésopotamie. Babylonie est devenue la principale puissance dans la région après que Hammurabi ait créé un empire sur plusieurs des territoires de l'ancien Empire Akkadien. L'état babylonien a conservé la langue écrite sémitique akkadienne pour un usage officiel, malgré ses fondateurs amorites et les successeurs kassites n'étant pas des Akkadiens natifs. Il a conservé la langue sumérienne à des fins religieuses, mais au moment où Bényle a été fondée, ce n'était plus une langue parlée, ayant été intégralement souscrit par les Akkadiens. Les premières traditions acadiennes et sumériennes ont joué un rôle majeur dans la culture babylonienne, et la région demeurerait un centre culturel important, même dans des périodes prolongées de la domination extérieure. La première mention de la ville de Babylone se trouve dans une tablette du règne de Sargon d'Akkad, datant du 23ème siècle av. J.-C.
