Backtracking
Backtracking est un algorithme général pour trouver toutes les solutions à un problème de calcul, qui crée progressivement les candidats aux solutions et abandonne chaque candidat partiel c dès qu'il détermine que c ne peut pas être complété à une solution valide. L'exemple classique de l'utilisation de backtracking est le puzzle de huit reines, qui demande tous les arrangements de huit reines d'échecs sur un échiquier standard afin qu'aucune reine n'attaque d'autres. Dans l'approche de rapprochement commune, les candidats partiels sont des arrangements de k reines dans les premières k lignes du tableau, tous dans des lignes et des colonnes différentes. Toute solution partielle qui contient deux reines mutuellement attaquantes peut être abandonnée, car elle ne peut être complétée par une solution valide. Backtracking peut être appliqué uniquement pour des problèmes qui reconnaissent le concept d'une «solution candidat partielle» et un test relativement rapide de la possibilité de compléter une solution valide. Il est inutile, par exemple, de localiser une valeur donnée dans une table non ordonnée.
