Bathybius haeckelii
Bathybius haeckelii était une substance que le biologiste britannique Thomas Henry Huxley a découvert et initialement considéré comme une forme de matière primordiale, source de toute vie organique. Il a plus tard admis sa faute lorsqu'il s'est avéré être le produit d'un processus chimique. En 1868, Huxley a étudié un vieux échantillon de boue du fond marin de l'Atlantique pris en 1857. Lorsqu'il l'a examiné pour la première fois, il n'a trouvé que des cellules de protozoaires et a placé l'échantillon dans un pot d'alcool pour le conserver. Maintenant, il remarqua que l'échantillon contenait une bouillie albuminée qui semblait croisée avec des veines. Huxley pensait qu'il avait découvert une nouvelle substance organique et l'avait nommé Bathybius haeckelii, en l'honneur du philosophe allemand Ernst Haeckel. Haeckel avait théorisé autour d'Urschleim, un protoplasme dont toute la vie était venue. Huxley pensait que Bathybius pourrait être ce protoplasme, un chaînon manquant entre la matière inorganique et la vie organique. Huxley a publié une description de Bathybius et a également écrit à Haeckel pour lui en parler. Haeckel a été impressionné et flatté et a obtenu un échantillon pour lui-même.
