Bathyscaphe
Un bathyscaphe est un submersible automotrice à plongée libre, composé d'une cabine d'équipage similaire à une bathysphère, mais suspendu au-dessous d'un flotteur plutôt que d'un câble de surface, comme dans le design classique de la bathysphère. Le flotteur est rempli d'essence car il est facilement disponible, dynamique, et à toutes fins pratiques, incompressible. L'incompressibilité de l'essence signifie que les réservoirs peuvent être très légèrement construits car la pression à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur des réservoirs est égale et ne sont pas nécessaires pour résister à tout différentiel de pression. En revanche, la cabine de l'équipage doit résister à un énorme différentiel de pression et est construit de manière massive. La flottabilité peut être facilement découpée en remplaçant l'essence par de l'eau, ce qui est plus dense. Auguste Piccard, inventeur du premier bathyscaphe, a composé le nom bathyscaphe en utilisant les mots grecs anciens βαθύς bathys et σκάφος skafhos.
