Bathysphere
La bathysphère (mots grecs βάθuς (bathus), "deep" et σφαίρα (sphaira), "sphère") est un submersible sphérique à haute mer qui n'a pas été alimenté et abaissé dans l'océan sur un câble, et utilisé pour mener une série de Plonge de la côte des Bermudes de 1930 à 1934. La Bathysphère a été conçue en 1928 et 1929 par l'ingénieur américain Otis Barton, pour être utilisé par le naturaliste William Beebe pour étudier la faune sous-marine. Beebe et Barton ont effectué des plongées dans le Bathysphere ensemble, marquant la première fois qu'un biologiste marin a observé des animaux de haute mer dans leur milieu naturel. Leurs plongées ont établi plusieurs records mondiaux consécutifs pour la plongée la plus profonde jamais réalisée par un humain. Le record établi par le plus profond de ces derniers, à une profondeur de 3.028 pieds le 15 août 1934, a duré jusqu'à ce qu'il ait été brisé par Barton en 1949.
