Bee-eater
Les bee-eaters sont un groupe d'oiseaux près de passerine dans la famille des Meropidae. La plupart des espèces se trouvent en Afrique et en Asie, mais d'autres se produisent dans le sud de l'Europe, en Australie et en Nouvelle-Guinée. Ils sont caractérisés par un plumage richement coloré, des corps minces et généralement des plumes de queue centrales allongées. Tous ont longtemps reculé des factures et des ailes pointues, ce qui leur donne une apparence d'hirondelle lorsqu'ils sont vus de loin. Il existe 26 espèces différentes d'abeilles. Comme son nom l'indique, les abeilleurs mangent principalement des insectes volants, en particulier des abeilles et des guêpes, qui sont capturés dans les airs par les sallies d'une perche ouverte. Alors qu'ils poursuivent n'importe quel type d'insecte volant, les abeilles de miel prédominent dans leur alimentation. Les hyménoptères comprennent de 20% à 96% de tous les insectes consommés, les abeilles comprenant environ un tiers des Hyménoptères. Avant de manger son repas, un apiculteur retire l'eau-forte en frappant à plusieurs reprises et en frottant l'insecte sur une surface dure. Au cours de ce processus, la pression est appliquée à l'insecte, ce qui permet d'extraire la plupart du venin. Notamment, les oiseaux ne prennent que des proies qui sont sur l'aile et ignorent les insectes volants une fois qu'ils atterrissent. Les abeilleurs sont grégaires.
