Un connaissement est un document délivré par un transporteur qui détaille une expédition de marchandises et donne le titre de cette expédition à une partie spécifiée. Les connaissements sont l'un des trois documents importants utilisés dans le commerce international pour garantir que les exportateurs reçoivent un paiement et les importateurs reçoivent des marchandises. Un bordereau de chargement direct est utilisé lorsque le paiement a été effectué avant l'expédition et exige qu'un transporteur livre la marchandise à la partie appropriée. Un bordereau de chargement de la commande est utilisé lors de l'expédition des marchandises avant le paiement, ce qui oblige un transporteur à livrer la marchandise à l'importateur et, à l'aval de l'exportateur, le transporteur peut transférer le titre à l'importateur. Les factures de commandes endossées peuvent être négociées à titre de garantie ou servir de garantie contre les dettes. Les connaissements comportent un certain nombre d'attributs supplémentaires, comme à bord, reçus pour l'expédition, propres et fausses. Un connaissement à bord indique que la marchandise a été chargée physiquement sur un navire d'expédition, comme un cargo ou un avion cargo.
