Bluetooth est une norme de technologie sans fil pour l'échange de données sur de courtes distances à partir de dispositifs fixes et mobiles et la construction de réseaux de zones personnelles. Inventé par le fournisseur de télécommunications Ericsson en 1994, il a été conçu à l'origine comme une alternative sans fil aux câbles de données RS-232. Il peut connecter plusieurs périphériques, surmonter les problèmes de synchronisation. Bluetooth est géré par le Groupe d'intérêt spécial Bluetooth, qui compte plus de 20 000 entreprises membres dans les domaines de la télécommunication, de l'informatique, du réseautage et de l'électronique grand public. Bluetooth était standardisé comme IEEE 802.15.1, mais la norme n'est plus maintenue. Le SIG supervise le développement de la spécification, gère le programme de qualification et protège les marques. Pour être commercialisé en tant que périphérique Bluetooth, il doit être qualifié selon les normes définies par le SIG. Un réseau de brevets est nécessaire pour implémenter la technologie, qui est autorisée uniquement pour ce dispositif admissible.
