Le célibat est volontairement célibataire, sexuellement abstinent ou les deux, généralement pour des raisons religieuses. Il est souvent associé au rôle d'un fonctionnaire religieux ou d'un dévot. Dans son sens étroit, le terme célibat ne s'applique qu'à ceux pour qui l'état non marié est le résultat d'un vœu sacré, d'un acte de renoncement ou d'une conviction religieuse. Dans un sens plus large, on comprend couramment qu'il ne signifie que l'abstinence de l'activité sexuelle. Le célibat a existé sous une forme ou une autre à travers l'histoire, dans pratiquement toutes les principales religions du monde, et les opinions ont varié. Le judaïsme antique était fortement opposé au célibat. De même, les Romains l'ont considérée comme une aberration et des sanctions fiscales prévues par la loi, à la seule exception accordée aux Vestal Virgins. Les chrétiens au Moyen Âge et en particulier les catholiques croyaient que le célibat était une condition préalable pour le bureau religieux. Le protestantisme a vu un renversement de cette tendance en Occident et l'Église orthodoxe orientale ne l'a jamais adoptée. Les attitudes islamiques envers le célibat ont également été complexes; Muhammad l'a dénoncé, mais certaines commandes soufies l'embrassent.
