Cephalisation
La cephalisation est considérée comme une tendance évolutive, dans laquelle le tissu nerveux, au cours de plusieurs générations, se concentre vers une extrémité d'un organisme. Ce processus produit éventuellement une région de tête avec des organes sensoriels. La célébration est intrinsèquement liée à un changement de symétrie. Il a accompagné le passage à la symétrie bilatérale faite dans les vers à plat, avec ocelli et pinnae placé dans la région de la tête. En plus d'une concentration d'organes sensoriels, tous les animaux issus des annelides placent également la bouche dans la région de la tête. Ce processus est également lié au développement d'un cerveau antérieur dans les cordes de la notochord. Une exception notable à la tendance de la cephalisation au cours de l'avancement de l'évolution est le phylum Echinodermata, qui, bien que possédant un ancêtre bilatéral, comme en témoignent leur embryologie, se transforme en un animal pénétrant sans ganglions neuronaux concentrés ou région de tête sensorielle. Cependant, certains échinodermes ont développé secondairement une symétrie bilatérale. En neuroembryologie, l'induction neurale de l'ectoderme forme un tube neural qui subit une céphalisation pour former initialement trois, puis cinq vésicules comme embryon en développement.
