Le daguerreotype / dəɡɛrɵtaɪp / process, introduit en 1839, a été le premier processus photographique annoncé publiquement et le premier à être largement utilisé. Au début des années 1860, les processus ultérieurs qui étaient moins coûteux et produisaient plus facilement des images vues avec des temps d'exposition plus courts l'avaient presque entièrement remplacé. Un renouveau à petite échelle de la daguerréotypie chez les photographes intéressés par les processus historiques a été de plus en plus évident dans les années 1980 et 1990 et a persisté dans les années 2010. L'image du daguerréotype est formée sur une surface argentée hautement polie, le plus souvent sur un substrat métallique comme le cuivre, mais au 19ème siècle, le laiton était également utilisé; Des daguerréotypes peuvent également être fabriqués sur des feuilles d'argent pur. Deux méthodes ont été utilisées dans le placage de l'argent à cuivre - galvanoplastie et plaque de Sheffield où l'argent et le cuivre sont collés sous pression et avec un recuit.
