Cellule Daniell
La cellule Daniell est un type de cellule électrochimique inventé en 1836 par John Frederic Daniell, chimiste et météorologue britannique, et consistait en un pot de cuivre rempli d'une solution de sulfate de cuivre, dans lequel était immergé un récipient en terre cuite non émaillé rempli d'acide sulfurique et un Électrode de zinc. Il cherchait un moyen d'éliminer le problème de la bulle d'hydrogène trouvé dans la pile voltaïque et sa solution était d'utiliser un second électrolyte pour consommer l'hydrogène produit par le premier. Le sulfate de zinc peut être substitué à l'acide sulfurique. La cellule Daniell a été une excellente amélioration par rapport à la technologie existante utilisée au début du développement de la batterie. Une variante plus récente de la cellule de Daniell appelée cellule de gravité ou cellule à pied de coq a été inventée dans les années 1860 par un Français nommé Callaud et est devenu un choix populaire pour la télégraphie électrique. La cellule Daniell est également la base historique de la définition contemporaine du volt, qui est l'unité de la force électromotrice dans le Système international d'unités.
