Description linguistique
Dans l'étude du langage, de la description ou de la linguistique descriptive, il s'agit d'analyser objectivement et de décrire comment le langage est prononcé par un groupe de personnes dans une communauté de discours. Toute recherche scientifique en linguistique est descriptive; Comme toutes les autres sciences, son objectif est d'observer le monde linguistique tel qu'il est, sans préjuger les idées préconçues sur la manière dont il doit l'être. La linguistique descriptive moderne repose sur une approche structurelle du langage, comme en témoignent les travaux de Leonard Bloomfield et d'autres. La description linguistique est souvent contrastée avec la prescription linguistique, notamment dans l'éducation et l'édition. La prescription vise à définir des formes linguistiques standard et à donner des conseils sur l'utilisation efficace du langage, et peut être considérée comme une présentation des fruits de la recherche descriptive sous une forme apprenante, mais elle s'appuie également sur des aspects plus subjectifs de l'esthétique du langage. La prescription et la description sont complémentaires, mais ont des priorités différentes et parfois elles sont en conflit. Le descriptivisme est la conviction que la description est plus importante ou importante pour enseigner, étudier et pratiquer que la prescription.
