La tumescence est la qualité ou l'état d'être tumescent ou gonflé. La tumescence se réfère généralement à l'engorgement normal avec le sang des tissus érectiles, marquant l'excitation sexuelle et l'éventuelle préparation à l'activité sexuelle. L'organe sexuel tumescent chez les hommes est le pénis et chez les femmes est le clitoris. La détérioration est l'inversion de ce processus, par lequel le sang sort du tissu érectile, revenant à l'état flasque.
