La coupe de diamant consiste à transformer un diamant d'une pierre brute en gemme à facettes. Le diamant de coupe nécessite des connaissances, des outils, des équipements et des techniques spécialisés en raison de son extrême difficulté. La première guilde de coupe-diamants et polisseuses a été formée en 1375 à Nuremberg, en Allemagne, et a mené au développement de divers types de «coupe». Cela a deux significations par rapport aux diamants. Le premier est la forme: carré, ovale, etc. La seconde concerne la qualité spécifique de coupe dans la forme, et la qualité et le prix varieront considérablement en fonction de la qualité de coupe. Étant donné que les diamants sont l'un des matériaux les plus durs, des surfaces spéciales en diamant sont utilisées pour broyer le diamant vers le bas. Le premier développement majeur de la coupe des diamants a eu lieu avec le «Point Cut» au cours de la dernière moitié du 14ème siècle: la coupe de points suit la forme naturelle d'un cristal de diamant brut octaédrique, éliminant certains déchets dans le processus de coupe.
