Réseau de diffraction
En optique, un réseau de diffraction est un composant optique avec une structure périodique, qui divise et diffuse la lumière en plusieurs faisceaux circulant dans des directions différentes. Les directions de ces faisceaux dépendent de l'espacement du réseau et de la longueur d'onde de la lumière de sorte que le réseau fonctionne comme élément dispersif. De ce fait, les réseaux sont couramment utilisés dans les monochromateurs et les spectromètres. Une diapositive photographique avec un beau motif de lignes violettes forme un réseau complexe. Pour les applications pratiques, les grilles ont généralement des arêtes ou des règles sur leur surface plutôt que des lignes sombres. Ces grilles peuvent être transmissives ou réfléchissantes. Les grilles qui modulent la phase plutôt que l'amplitude de la lumière incidente sont également produites, en utilisant fréquemment l'holographie. Les principes des réseaux de diffraction ont été découverts par James Gregory, environ un an après les expériences de prisme de Newton, initialement avec des artefacts comme les plumes d'oiseaux. Le premier réseau de diffraction artificiel a été fabriqué vers 1785 par l'inventeur David Rittenhouse de Philadelphie, qui a enfilé les cheveux entre deux vis finement filetées.
