Dioclétien
Dioclétien était empereur romain de 284 à 305. Né à une famille de statut faible dans la province romaine de Dalmatie, Dioclétien s'est élevé dans les rangs de l'armée pour devenir commandant de cavalerie à l'empereur Carus. Après la mort de Carus et de son fils Numerian en campagne en Perse, Dioclétien fut proclamé empereur. Le titre a également été revendiqué par l'autre fils survivant de Carus, Carinus, mais Diocletian l'a vaincu dans la bataille du Margus. Le règne de Dioclétien a stabilisé l'empire et marque la fin de la crise du troisième siècle. Il a nommé son collègue Maximian comme augustin, co-empereur, en 286. Dioclétien a délégué le 1er mars 293, en nommant Galerius et Constantius en tant que césars, co-empereurs juniors. Sous cette «tétrarchie», ou «règle des quatre», chaque empereur régnerait sur un quart de division de l'empire. Dioclétien a assuré les frontières de l'empire et a purgé toute menace à son pouvoir. Il a vaincu les Sarmatiens et Carpi lors de plusieurs campagnes entre 285 et 299, les Alamanni en 288 et les usurpateurs en Egypte entre 297 et 298. Galerius, aidé par Dioclétien, a mené une campagne avec succès contre Sassanid Persia, l'ennemi traditionnel de l'empire.
