Diphtérie
La diphtérie (grecque διφθέρα (diphthera) "paire de rouleaux en cuir") est une maladie des voies respiratoires supérieures causée par Corynebacterium diphtheriae, une bactérie anaérobie facultative Gram-positive. Il se caractérise par un mal de gorge, une fièvre faible et une membrane adhérente (une pseudomembrane) sur les amygdales, le pharynx et / ou la cavité nasale. Une forme plus légère de diphtérie peut être limitée à la peau. Les conséquences moins fréquentes comprennent la myocardite (environ 20% des cas) et la neuropathie périphérique (environ 10% des cas). La diphtérie est une maladie infectieuse propagée par contact physique direct ou la respiration des sécrétions aérosolées d'individus infectés. Historiquement très fréquent, la diphtérie a été largement éradiquée dans les pays développés grâce à une vaccination généralisée. Aux États-Unis, par exemple, il y a eu 53 cas déclarés de diphtérie entre 1980 et 2000, mais au 21ème siècle, seuls deux cas de diphtérie ont été rapportés, dont le dernier en 2003.
