Donatisme
Donatism était une secte chrétienne dans la province romaine d'Afrique qui a prospéré au quatrième et cinquième siècles parmi les chrétiens berbères. Donatism a ses racines dans les pressions sociales parmi la communauté chrétienne établie de longue date de l'Afrique du Nord romaine, pendant les persécutions des chrétiens sous Dioclétien. Les donatistes étaient membres d'une église schismatique qui n'était pas en communion avec les églises du reste du christianisme ancien dans l'Antiquité tardive. Donatism était un résultat indirect des persécutions de Dioclétien. Le gouverneur d'Afrique était indulgent envers la grande minorité chrétienne sous son règne pendant les persécutions. Il était satisfait quand les chrétiens ont remis leurs Écritures comme une répugnance symbolique de leur foi. Certains chrétiens ont accédé à cette action pratique. Cependant, lorsque les persécutions ont pris fin, elles ont été des marques de commerce, «celles qui ont remis» par les zélés, principalement des classes les plus pauvres. Comme le schisme de Novatianist du siècle précédent, les donatistes étaient des rigoristes, estimant que l'église devait être une église de «saints», pas «pécheurs», et que les sacrements, tels que le baptême, administrés par les traditeurs étaient invalides.
