Un système économique ou économique consiste en la production, la distribution ou le commerce et la consommation de biens et de services limités par différents agents dans un lieu géographique donné. Les agents économiques peuvent être des individus, des entreprises, des organisations ou des gouvernements. Les transactions se produisent lorsque deux parties acceptent la valeur ou le prix du bien ou du service traité, généralement exprimé dans une certaine devise. Dans le passé, l'activité économique était théorisée pour être limitée par les ressources naturelles, le travail et le capital. Cette vue ignore la valeur de la technologie et de l'innovation, en particulier celle qui produit la propriété intellectuelle. Une économie donnée est le résultat d'un ensemble de processus qui implique sa culture, ses valeurs, son éducation, son évolution technologique, son histoire, son organisation sociale, sa structure politique et ses systèmes juridiques, ainsi que sa géographie, sa dotation en ressources naturelles et son écologie, en tant que facteurs principaux . Ces facteurs donnent le contexte, le contenu et définissent les conditions et les paramètres dans lesquels fonctionne une économie.
