Euglena
Euglena est un genre de protistes flagellés unicellulaires. C'est le membre le plus connu et le plus largement étudié du phylum Euglenophyta, un groupe diversifié contenant environ 44 genres et au moins 800 espèces. Les espèces d'Euglena se trouvent dans les eaux fraîches et les eaux salées. Ils sont souvent abondants dans les eaux calmes et intérieures, où ils peuvent fleurir en nombre suffisant pour colorier la surface des étangs et des fossés verts ou rouges. L'espèce Euglena gracilis, a été largement utilisée dans le laboratoire comme organisme modèle. La plupart des espèces d'Euglena ont la photosynthèse des chloroplastes dans le corps de la cellule, ce qui leur permet de se nourrir par autotrophie, comme les plantes. Cependant, ils peuvent également se nourrir hétérotrophiquement, comme les animaux. Étant donné que Euglena possède des caractéristiques à la fois des animaux et des plantes, les premiers taxonomistes, travaillant dans le système linéaire de deux groupes de classification biologique, les ont trouvés difficiles à classer. C'était la question de savoir où placer de telles créatures "inclassables" qui ont incité Ernst Haeckel à ajouter un troisième royaume à Animale et Vegetabile de Linnaeus: le Protétorial du Royaume.
