Dans la géométrie différentielle des courbes, l'évolution d'une courbe est le lieu de tous ses centres de courbure. C'est-à-dire que lorsque le centre de courbure de chaque point sur une courbe est dessiné, la forme résultante sera l'évolution de cette courbe. L'évolution d'un cercle est donc un seul point au centre. De manière équivalente, une évolution est l'enveloppe des normales à une courbe. L'évolution d'une courbe, d'une surface, ou plus généralement d'une sous-variété, est la caustique de la carte normale. Soit M une sous-variété uniforme et régulière dans Rn. Pour chaque point p en M et chaque vecteur v, basé sur p et normal à M, on associe le point p + v. Ceci définit une carte Lagrangienne appelée la carte normale. La caustique de la carte normale est l'évolution de M.
