Extraposition
L'extraction est un mécanisme de syntaxe qui modifie l'ordre des mots de manière à ce qu'un constituant relativement «lourd» apparaisse au droit de sa position canonique. L'extraction d'un constituant entraîne une discontinuité et, à cet égard, il est différent du décalage, ce qui ne génère pas de discontinuité. Le constituant extraposé est séparé de son gouverneur par un ou plusieurs mots qui dominent son gouverneur. Deux types d'extractions sont reconnus dans la syntaxe théorique: les cas standard où l'extraposition est facultative et l'extraposition où l'extraction est obligatoire. L'extraction est motivée en partie par le désir de réduire l'intégration du centre en augmentant la ramification de droite et facilitant ainsi le traitement, les structures intégrées au centre étant plus difficiles à traiter. L'extraction se produit fréquemment en anglais et dans les langues connexes.
