Folklore
Le folklore se compose de légendes, de musique, d'histoire orale, de proverbes, de blagues, de croyances populaires, de contes de fées, d'histoires, de contes et de coutumes comprises dans les traditions d'une culture, d'une sous-culture ou d'un groupe. Il comprend également l'ensemble des pratiques par lesquelles ces genres expressifs sont partagés. L'étude du folklore est parfois appelée folkloristique, et les personnes qui étudient le folklore sont parfois appelées «folkloristes». L'antiquaire anglais William Thoms a présenté le mot «folklore» dans une lettre publiée dans le journal de Londres The Athenaeum en 1846. En usage, il existe un continuum entre le folklore et la mythologie. Stith Thompson a tenté principalement d'indexer les motifs du folklore et de la mythologie, en fournissant un aperçu de la classification de nouveaux motifs et dans lesquels les chercheurs peuvent suivre tous les motifs anciens. If a student takes the whole series of my folklore courses including the graduate seminars, he or she should learn something about fieldwork, something about bibliography, something about how to carry out library research, and something about how to publish that research.
They do not merely collect texts; they must also gather data about the context and the informant and, above all, write an analysis of the items based upon the course readings and lecture material on folklore theory and method.
The class has become over the years fairly large, running to three hundred or more, but I always insist upon reading all the student folklore collections myself. Although this is a tall order, I look forward to it because I learn so much from it.

I have a great advantage over many of my colleagues inasmuch as my students bring with them to class their own personal knowledge of national, regional, religious, ethnic, occupational, and family folklore traditions.
If you take myth and folklore, and these things that speak in symbols, they can be interpreted in so many ways that although the actual image is clear enough, the interpretation is infinitely blurred, a sort of enormous rainbow of every possible colour you could imagine.
