Rayon gamma
Le rayonnement gamma, également connu sous le nom de rayons gamma, et désigné par la lettre grecque γ, se réfère à un rayonnement électromagnétique de très haute fréquence et donc à une forte énergie par photon. Les rayons gamma sont des rayonnements ionisants et sont donc biologiquement dangereux. Ils sont classiquement produits par la décroissance des états à haute énergie des noyaux atomiques, mais sont également créés par d'autres processus. Paul Villard, chimiste et physicien français, a découvert le rayonnement gamma en 1900, tout en étudiant le rayonnement émis par le radium. Le rayonnement de Villard a été nommé «rayons gamma» par Ernest Rutherford en 1903. Les sources naturelles de rayons gamma sur Terre incluent la désintégration gamma des radio-isotopes naturels et les rayonnements secondaires des interactions atmosphériques avec les particules de rayons cosmiques. Les sources naturelles terrestres rares produisent des rayons gamma qui ne sont pas d'origine nucléaire, tels que des éclairs et des rayons de rayons gamma terrestres. En outre, les rayons gamma sont également produits par un certain nombre de processus astronomiques dans lesquels des électrons à très énergie élevée produisent, qui provoquent des rayons gamma secondaires via bremsstrahlung, la diffusion inverse de Compton et le rayonnement synchrotron.
