La santé est le niveau d'efficacité fonctionnelle ou métabolique d'un organisme vivant. Chez l'homme, c'est l'état général de l'esprit et du corps d'une personne, ce qui signifie habituellement être exempt de maladie, de blessure ou de douleur. L'Organisation mondiale de la santé a défini la santé dans son sens plus large en 1946 comme «un état de bien-être physique, mental et social complet et non seulement l'absence de maladie ou d'infirmité». Bien que cette définition ait fait l'objet de controverses, en particulier faute de valeur opérationnelle et en raison du problème créé par l'utilisation du mot «complet», il reste le plus durable. D'autres définitions ont été proposées, parmi lesquelles une définition récente qui correspond à la santé et à la satisfaction personnelle. Les systèmes de classification tels que la Famille OMS de Classifications Internationales, y compris la Classification internationale du fonctionnement, de l'invalidité et de la santé et la Classification internationale des maladies, sont couramment utilisés pour définir et mesurer les composantes de la santé. Des activités systématiques pour prévenir ou guérir les problèmes de santé et promouvoir une bonne santé chez l'homme sont entreprises par les fournisseurs de soins de santé.
