Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel était un philosophe allemand et une figure majeure de l'idéalisme allemand. Son récit historiciste et idéaliste de la réalité a révolutionné la philosophie européenne et était un précurseur important de la philosophie continentale et du marxisme. Des exemples de ces contradictions incluent ceux entre la nature et la liberté, et entre l'immanence et la transcendance. Hegel a influencé les écrivains de positions très variées, y compris à la fois ses admirateurs et ses détracteurs. Karl Barth a comparé Hegel à un "Protestant d'Aquin".
