Hekla
Hekla (prononciation islandaise: (écoute)), ou Hecla, est un stratovolcain au sud de l'Islande avec une hauteur de 1.491 mètres (4.892 pieds). Hekla est l'un des volcans les plus actifs d'Islande; Plus de 20 éruptions ont eu lieu dans et autour du volcan depuis 874. Au Moyen Âge, les Européens ont appelé le volcan «Gateway to Hell». Hekla fait partie d'une crête volcanique de 40 kilomètres (25 mi) de long. La partie la plus active de cette crête, une fissure d'environ 5,5 km (3,4 mi) de long nommée Heklugjá, est considérée comme le volcan Hekla proprement dit. Hekla ressemble plutôt à un bateau renversé, sa quille étant une série de cratères, dont deux sont généralement les plus actifs. Les éruptions fréquentes du volcan ont couvert une grande partie de l'Islande avec le téphra et ces couches peuvent être utilisées à ce jour des éruptions des autres volcans d'Islande. 10% du tephra créé en Islande au cours des mille dernières années est venu d'Hekla, soit 5 km3. Le volcan a produit l'un des plus grands volumes de lave du monde au cours du dernier millénaire, soit environ 8 km3.
