Fluor d'hydrogène
Le fluorure d'hydrogène est un composé chimique de formule HF. Ce gaz incolore est la principale source industrielle de fluor, souvent sous forme aqueuse comme acide fluorhydrique, et est donc le précurseur de nombreux composés importants, y compris les produits pharmaceutiques et les polymères. HF est largement utilisé dans l'industrie pétrochimique et est une composante de nombreux superacids. Le fluorure d'hydrogène bouillonne juste en dessous de la température ambiante tandis que les autres halogénures d'hydrogène se condensent à des températures beaucoup plus faibles. Contrairement aux autres halogénures d'hydrogène, le HF est plus léger que l'air et diffuse relativement rapidement à travers des substances poreuses. Le fluorure d'hydrogène est un gaz très dangereux, formant un acide fluorhydrique corrosif et pénétrant au contact du tissu. Le gaz peut également provoquer une cécité par destruction rapide des cornées. Le chimiste français Edmond Frémy est crédité de la découverte de fluorure d'hydrogène anhydre tout en essayant d'isoler le fluor, bien que Carl Wilhelm Scheele ait préparé de l'acide fluorhydrique en grandes quantités en 1771, et cet acide était connu dans l'industrie du verre avant cette date.
