Hyperthésie
L'hyperthésie est une condition qui implique une augmentation anormale de la sensibilité aux stimuli du sens. "Lorsqu'une stimulation non nocive cause la sensation de douleur, la zone sera appelée hyperthésique". Les stimulations des sens peuvent inclure le son que l'on entend, les aliments que l'on apprécie, les textures que l'on ressente, etc. La sensibilité au toucher accrue est appelée «hyperthésie tactile» et une sensibilité acoustique accrue s'appelle «hyperthésie auditive». L'hyperthésie tactile peut être un symptôme fréquent de nombreux troubles neurologiques tels que l'herpès zoster, la neuropathie périphérique et les radiculopathies. En 1979, puis en 1994, Merskey, Bogduk, Noordenbos, Devor et d'autres proposaient, au lieu de l'hyperaestheia, le concept d'allodynie, signifiant «autre douleur», définie comme une douleur résultant d'un stimulus qui ne provoque pas normalement la douleur.
