La perception est l'organisation, l'identification et l'interprétation de l'information sensorielle afin de représenter et de comprendre l'environnement. Toute perception implique des signaux dans le système nerveux, qui à leur tour résultent de la stimulation physique ou chimique des organes sensoriels. Par exemple, la vision implique la frappe légère de la rétine de l'œil, l'odeur est médiée par des molécules d'odeur et l'ouïe implique des ondes de pression. La perception n'est pas la réception passive de ces signaux, mais elle est façonnée par l'apprentissage, la mémoire, les attentes et l'attention. La perception implique ces effets «de haut en bas» ainsi que le processus «de bas en haut» de traitement de l'entrée sensorielle. Le traitement "bas en haut" transforme les informations de bas niveau en informations de niveau supérieur. Le traitement «de haut en bas» se réfère au concept et aux attentes d'une personne et à des mécanismes sélectifs qui influencent la perception. La perception dépend des fonctions complexes du système nerveux, mais subjectivement semble surtout sans effort car ce traitement se produit en dehors de la conscience. Depuis la montée de la psychologie expérimentale au 19ème siècle, la compréhension de la perception de la psychologie a progressé en combinant une variété de techniques.
