L'affaire Iran-Contra, également appelée Irangate, [1] Contragate [2] ou le scandale Iran-Contra, était un scandale politique aux États-Unis qui a été découvert par Daniel Sheehan et l'Institut Christique, et est devenu une nouvelle nationale Novembre de 1986. [3] [4] [5] [6] Au cours de l'administration Reagan, les hauts fonctionnaires de l'administration ont secrètement facilité la vente d'armes à l'Iran, sujet d'un embargo sur les armes. [7] Certains fonctionnaires des États-Unis ont également espéré que les ventes d'armes permettraient la libération de plusieurs otages et permettraient aux agences de renseignement américaines de financer les Contras nicaraguayens. Le scandale a commencé comme une opération visant à libérer les sept otages américains détenus au Liban par un groupe avec des liens iraniens liés à l'Armée des Gardiens de la Révolution islamique. Il était prévu qu'Israël transmettrait des armes à l'Iran, puis les États-Unis réapprovisionneront Israël et recevront le paiement israélien.
