Il était historiquement dans le comté de Durham, mais en 1974 il est devenu une partie du comté métropolitain de Tyne et Wear. Au VIIIe siècle, le monastère de Saint Paul à Jarrow était la maison de Bede, considéré comme le plus grand érudit anglo-saxon et le père de l'histoire anglaise. Dès le milieu du 19ème siècle jusqu'en 1935, Jarrow était un centre de construction navale et était le point de départ de la guerre de Jarrow contre le chomage en 1936.
