Fuchsia excorticata
Fuchsia excorticata, communément appelée fuchsia arborescente, fuchsia néo-zélandaise et par son nom maori kōtukutuku, est un arbre indigène néo-zélandais appartenant à la famille Onagraceae. Il se trouve couramment dans toute la Nouvelle-Zélande et aussi loin au sud que les îles Auckland. Il croît du niveau de la mer jusqu'à environ 1000 m, en particulier aux coteaux et aux rivières. Il est facilement reconnu dans son environnement naturel par l'aspect caractéristique de son écorce, qui se détache spontanément, suspendu dans des bandes de papiers rouges pour montrer une écorce pâle en dessous. F. excorticata est le plus grand membre du genre Fuchsia, atteignant 15 m de hauteur. Il est inhabituel parmi les arbres néo-zélandais d'être caduque dans les parties méridionales de sa gamme. L'introduction du gingembre commun à la Nouvelle-Zélande a précipité un déclin sérieux de cette espèce, en particulier lorsque de grandes concentrations du gingembre sont présentes. F. excorticata semble être l'une des sources de nourriture privilégiées du gouverneur, et ils parcouriront les arbres individuels jusqu'au point de défoliation après quoi les arbres mourront. La petite baie violette foncée est douce et juteuse.
