Leontiasis Ossea, également appelée leontiasis ou visage de lion, est une condition médicale rare, caractérisée par une prolifération des ossements facial et crânien. Ce n'est pas une maladie en soi, mais un symptôme d'autres maladies, y compris la maladie de Paget, la dysplasie fibreuse, l'hyperparathyroïdie et l'ostéodystrophie rénale. La forme commune est celle dans laquelle l'un ou l'autre maxillaire est affecté, sa taille augmente progressivement et empiète sur les cavités de l'orbite, la bouche, le nez et ses sinus accessoires. L'exophtalmite se développe peu à peu, passant plus tard à une perte complète de vue due à la compression du nerf optique par la prolifération des os. Il peut aussi y avoir des interférences avec la respiration nasale et la prise de nourriture. Dans la forme un peu moins commune de cette maladie rare, le surcroissement de l'os affecte tous les os crâniens ainsi que ceux du visage, les sens étant perdus un par un et la mort résultant finalement de la pression cérébrale. Il n'y a pas de traitement autre que l'exposition de l'os trop grand, et le découpage des morceaux, ou l'excision dans la mesure du possible.

Leontiasis Ossea, also known as leontiasis or lion face, is a rare medical condition, characterized by an overgrowth of the facial and cranial bones. It is not a disease in itself, but a symptom of other diseases, including Paget's disease, fibrous dysplasia, hyperparathyroidism and renal osteodystrophy. The common form is that in which one or other maxilla is affected, its size progressively increasing, and thus encroaching on the cavities of the orbit, the mouth, the nose and its accessory sinuses. Exophthalmos gradually develops, going on later to a complete loss of sight due to compression of the optic nerve by the overgrowth of bone. There may also be interference with the nasal respiration and with the taking of food. In the somewhat less common form of this rare disease the overgrowth of bone affects all the cranial bones as well as those of the face, the senses being lost one by one and death finally resulting from cerebral pressure. There is no treatment other than exposing the overgrown bone, and chipping away pieces, or excising entirely where possible.
