Dans les télécommunications, un appel interurbain ou un appel téléphonique est un appel téléphonique effectué en dehors d'une zone locale définie, habituellement dans une autre ville. Ces appels se caractérisent généralement par leur coût par minute plus élevé, en se terminant à une destination desservie par un échange téléphonique local différent ou en passant par des troncs interurbains ou des transporteurs intercirconscriptions au lieu d'une ligne directe entre deux échanges adjacents. Un appel interurbain n'est pas nécessairement synonyme d'un appel vers un autre code de zone téléphonique. Avant le marquage à distance directe, tous les appels interurbains ont été assistés par un opérateur de longue distance spécial, même dans les échanges où les appels au sein de l'échange local étaient en ligne directe. L'achèvement des appels interurbains coûte beaucoup de temps car chaque appel a été traité par plusieurs opérateurs dans plusieurs villes. La tenue de dossiers était également plus complexe, car le temps, la longueur et la durée de chaque appel de péage devaient être enregistrés manuellement à des fins de facturation. Dans certains pays, les taux à distance étaient historiquement maintenus artificiellement élevés pour subventionner des services résidentiels locaux à prix forfaitaires non rentables.

In telecommunications, a long-distance call or trunk call is a telephone call made outside a defined local area, usually to another city. These calls are typically characterized by their higher per-minute cost, by terminating at a destination served by a different local telephone exchange or by being carried over intercity trunks or interexchange carriers instead of a direct line between two adjacent exchanges. A long-distance call is not necessarily synonymous with a call to another telephone area code. Before direct distance dial, all long-distance calls were operator assisted by a special long-distance operator even in exchanges where calls within the local exchange were direct dial. Completion of intercity calls was time-consuming and costly as each call was handled by multiple operators in multiple cities. Record keeping was also more complex, as the time, length and duration of every toll call had to be manually recorded for billing purposes. In some countries long-distance rates were historically kept artificially high to subsidise unprofitable flat-rate local residential services.
