Une voyelle ouverte est un voyant dans lequel la langue est positionnée le plus loin possible du toit de la bouche. Les voyelles ouvertes sont parfois aussi appelées voyelles faibles en référence à la position basse de la langue. Les deux premiers peuvent désigner soit une voyelle avant-frontale, soit une voyelle centrale, tandis que les deux dernières sont une voyelle rapprochée ou centrale. Dans le contexte de la phonologie d'une langue particulière, une voyelle basse peut être une voyelle plus ouverte qu'une voyelle intermédiaire. C'est-à-dire que les voyelles ouvertes, les voyelles presque ouvertes et les voyelles ouvertes peuvent être considérées comme des voyelles faibles.
