Meristem
Un méristème est le tissu dans la plupart des plantes contenant des cellules indifférenciées, trouvées dans les zones de la plante où la croissance peut avoir lieu. Les cellules méristématiques donnent naissance à divers organes de la plante et maintiennent la croissance des plantes. Le méristème apical de la poussée donne lieu à des organes comme les feuilles et les fleurs, tandis que le méristème racine apical fournit les cellules méristématiques pour la croissance future de la racine. Les cellules SAM et RAM se divisent rapidement et sont considérées comme indéterminées, car elles ne possèdent aucun statut final défini. Dans ce sens, les cellules méristématiques sont fréquemment comparées aux cellules souches chez les animaux, qui ont un comportement et une fonction analogues. Le terme «méristème» a d'abord été utilisé en 1858 par Karl Wilhelm von Nägeli dans son livre Beiträge zur Wissenschaftlichen Botanik. Il est dérivé du mot grec merizein, c'est-à-dire de diviser, en reconnaissance de sa fonction inhérente. En général, les cellules végétales différenciées ne peuvent pas diviser ou produire des cellules de type différent.
