Un métamale est une faible viabilité de la mouche des fruits de Drosophila avec un phénotype masculin dans lequel le rapport des chromosomes X aux ensembles d'autosomes est inférieur à 0,5. Par exemple: une mouche avec un chromosome X et deux ensembles d'autosomes est un mâle normal, une mouche avec un chromosome X et trois ensembles d'autosomes est un métamale. Le généticien américain Calvin Bridges, qui a découvert le système générique de détermination du sexe à Drosophila en 1921, utilisait les termes «superfemale» et «supermale». Le généticien germano-américain Curt Stern a proposé les termes alternatifs «metafemale» et «metamale» en 1959.
