Métastase
La métastase, ou la maladie métastatique, est la propagation d'un cancer d'un organe à l'autre. Les nouvelles occurrences de maladies ainsi générées sont appelées métastases. On pensait auparavant que seules les cellules tumorales malignes et les infections ont la capacité de se métastaser; Cependant, cela est reconsidéré en raison de nouvelles recherches. La métastase d'origine est un mot grec signifiant "déplacement", de μετά, meta, "next", et στάσις, stasis, "placement". Le pluriel est une métastase / mə tæs tə siːz /. Le cancer survient après qu'une seule cellule dans un tissu est génétiquement endommagée pour produire des cellules avec une prolifération incontrôlée. Cette prolifération incontrôlée, la mitose, produit une tumeur hétérogène primaire. Les cellules qui constituent la tumeur subissent finalement une métaplasie, suivie d'une dysplasie puis d'une anaplasie, entraînant un phénotype malin. Cette malignité permet une invasion dans la circulation, suivie d'une invasion vers un deuxième site pour la tumorigénèse.
