Le mouvement méthodiste est un groupe de dénominations historiquement liées du christianisme protestant qui tirent leur inspiration de la vie et des enseignements de John Wesley. George Whitefield et le frère de John Charles Wesley étaient aussi des leaders importants dans le mouvement. Il est originaire d'un renouveau au sein de l'église d'Angleterre du XVIIIe siècle et est devenu une église distincte suite à la mort de Wesley. En raison de l'activité missionnaire vigoureuse, le mouvement s'est répandu dans tout l'Empire britannique, aux États-Unis et au-delà, réclamant aujourd'hui environ 80 millions d'adhérents dans le monde entier. Le méthodisme se caractérise par son accent sur l'aide aux pauvres et à la personne moyenne, à une approche très systématique de la construction de la personne et de l'Église et de son esprit missionnaire. Ces idéaux sont mis en pratique par la création d'hôpitaux, d'universités, d'orphelinats, de soupes populaires et d'écoles pour suivre l'ordre de Jésus de diffuser les bonnes nouvelles et de servir toutes les personnes. Le mouvement méthodiste est également connu pour sa riche tradition musicale. Charles Wesley a joué un rôle important dans l'écriture de l'hymne de l'Église méthodiste, et de nombreux autres éminents auteurs d'hymnes proviennent de la tradition méthodiste.
