Le djihadisme se réfère à l'accent renouvelé sur le djihad armé dans le fondamentalisme islamique depuis le 20ème siècle, mais avec une histoire continue remontant au début des années 1800. Le «jihadisme» couvre à la fois la guérilla des moudjahidines et le terrorisme islamique avec un champ d'application international à partir des années 1980, depuis les années 90, essentiellement représenté par le réseau d'al-Qaïda. Il a ses racines dans les développements idéologiques de la fin du XIXe et du début du XXe siècle du renouveau islamique, développés en Qutbisme et idéologies apparentées au milieu du 20e siècle. La montée du djihadisme a été renforcée par l'invasion soviétique de l'Afghanistan en 1979 et a été propagée dans divers conflits armés dans les années 90 et 2000. Un djihadisme spécialement salafiste a été diagnostiqué dans le mouvement Salafi moderne par Gilles Kepel au milieu des années 1990. Le djihadisme avec une portée internationale pan-islamiste dans ce sens est également connu sous le nom de jihadisme global. En général, le terme «djihadisme» désigne la lutte armée islamiste sunnite. Les tensions sectaires ont conduit à de nombreuses formes de jihadisme contre les mosquées chiites, soufies et ahmadi.

Jihadism refers to the renewed focus on armed jihad in Islamic fundamentalism since the later 20th century, but with a continuous history reaching back to the early 1800s. "Jihadism" in this sense covers both Mujahideen guerilla warfare and Islamic terrorism with an international scope as it arose from the 1980s, since the 1990s substantially represented by the al-Qaeda network. It has its roots in the late 19th and early 20th century ideological developments of Islamic revivalism, developed into Qutbism and related ideologies during the mid 20th century. The rise of jihadism was re-enforced by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, and has been propagated in various armed conflicts throughout the 1990s and 2000s. A specifically Salafist jihadism has been diagnosed within the modern Salafi movement by Gilles Kepel in the mid-1990s. Jihadism with an international, Pan-Islamist scope in this sense is also known as Global Jihadism. Generally the term jihadism denotes Sunni Islamist armed struggle. Sectarian tensions led to numerous forms of jihadism against Shia, Sufi and Ahmadi mosques.
